Criminal, the album's most popular single, won a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1998. Fiona Apple. The second track on Fiona Apples debut album, released in 1996 when she was 18 years old, is a ballad about trauma. She describes the paralysis of depression: how the hurt stalks below the surface how emotions rage and contort out of view. And theres too much going onBut its calm under the wavesIn the blue of my oblivion, she sings, as if facing a brewing wind, her voice a beacon of dignity, soul, and resolve. Her voice is surprisingly rich and supple for a teenager, and her jazzy, sophisticated piano playing also belies her age. Given the right material, such talents could have flourished, but she has concentrated on her own compositions, which are nowhere near as impressive as her musicianship. Sullen Girl -a wrenching piano ballad examining the wounds of her early sexual assault-is simultaneously full of malaise and hope, while the proud lead single Criminal puts Apple wholly in charge. The self-confessed bad, bad girl drew a heartwrenchingly relatable portrait of teenage turbulence. The album spawned six singles, including Criminal, a top-40 hit in the United States. Apple later won a Grammy for the song. The video for Sleep to Dream won an MTV Video Music Award, where Fiona made her famous This world is bullshit acceptance speech. NPR ranked the record as the 125 greatest album made by a female artist, saying: Fiona Apple unfurled her debut album with a roll of thunder, in the form of Sleep to Dream. 10 tracks 51:31. According to Nielsen SoundScan, it was certified 3x platinum by the RIAA in December 1997. This album is rated in the top 2 of all albums on . Time left: 8h 52m 14s Ships to: Worldwide. This is the album that burst her onto the singersongwriter scene, and being only 18 years old at the time of it's 's amazing to see the maturity of her songwriting displayed throughout. The consistency, the intelligent lyrical content, the unmistakable knack for creating cascading melodies and intricate song is all present here. An artist of her age should not be capable of such a musical feat. Only a true talent can display such wonderful musicianship. Apple is obviously talented-she has a dark, smoky alto and a knack for an arresting turn of phrase-but she's still several years away from realizing her potential. For every fresh lyric she writes Daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary of waiting to be consumed by you, she provides two examples of embarrassingly precious schoolgirl poetry Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red, from the same song, Th

In how far do the 'Enhanced' editions differ from the regular ones?
I don't think so. I checked all submissions, but none of them mentions this video.
I think the enhanced version has the Shadowboxer video on it and you can watch it on a computer. The music isn't any different.
How come it never came out on vinyl?I very much would like that
It's because record companies had stopped producing vinyl in the 1990s. You found new records on vinyl only in UK at that time. You had Cassettes and vinyls to 8 pounds and CDs to 15 pounds so it was pretty much a bargain and that's why we bought them, not for "sound quality and dynamics" like hifi sellers tell you today which is BS. All those 1990s hits are now researched on vinyl
NO KIDDING. How is Fiona's first two LP's not on vinyl?
I am in love with The first taste. Apple, I can' help but think, spent a lot of time perfecting the song. However, the video was not of this tune, and I wonder why. The jazzy elements to me are impossible to create, and it seems like it is second nature to her. Except for her infamous blow-up at the MTV awards which I missed, and her subsequent albums, I am all for her.
