Comments to album Moby - Go - The Very Best Of Moby

"Best Of" releases are always subject to dispute by fans, because everybody has his or her own vision of which tracks actually are the artist's "best".

This album is no exception - to me as a fan who started listening to Moby the time "Everything Is Wrong" was released, it's hard to accept that most of the tracks chosen for this are from the "Play" and "18" albums (even "Hotel" is only featured with 2 songs). Only 4 tracks on the first disc were released before Moby's "Play" phase, and even though "Go" is chosen as the title track, it is not included in the version which made it Moby's first big hit in 1991, but in the remixed version which was included on 1997's "I Like To Score".
The whole first disc leaves me with mixed feelings - it only contains one previously unreleased track, which makes it of little use for fans. On the other hand, the track selection is concentrated on a very specific period in Moby's career and doesn't really manage to give new listeners an insight into the artist's musical development.

The second disc is even stranger, in that the producers seemingly couldn't decide what kind of remix collection they wanted to do. The way I see it, there are two ways to do a good remix album: Either you weave the remixes into a club-friendly continuous DJ Mix, or you pick versions that take the songs into different musical directions. In the latter case, the songs should be included in their full length versions. A good example of how to combine these two approaches was Moby's own "Everything Is Wrong - Mixed & Remixed & Remixed & Mixed" album, which was a DJ mix that still managed to connect house, techno, trance, happy hardcore and ambient and thereby stayed true to the original album's ecclecticism while still creating an enjoyable dance mix.
The remix disc on "Go - The Very Best Of Moby" though manages to combine the worst of these two approaches, in that it offers little musical diversity, is not mixed and doesn't even contain the remixes in their full length - they are cut at the start and at the end (for example, the Olav Basoski mix of "Bodyrock" is cut from 6:30 to only 4 minutes). Why this was decided is beyond me.
Also, the track selection on this remix disc is rather dull. Through the course of his career, Moby's songs have been remixed by artists as diverse as Jon Spencer, Mike D, Grooverider and Philip Steir, so it would have been easy to create an interesting mix of styles here. But instead, the disc contains almost exclusively house and trance mixes aimed at big, strobo-lighted floors, with CJ Bolland's dark big beat take on "James Bond Theme (Moby's Re-Version)" and Moby's own underground house mix of "Feeling So Real" being the only exceptions.

While I wouldn't recommend the first two discs of this release to anyone, the real treat (and the reason why I still rate the release with 5 points) is the included DVD. Rather than just compiling the videos for the tracks on the "Best Of" CD, this disc comes with the clips for almost every one of Moby's singles and even includes some alternate versions like the animated video of "Natual Blues" which was done exclusively for the German market. Sequenced chronologically, the videos give a good insight into Moby's evolution as a musician, from the lush house/trance fusion of "Go" (which is included in the 1991 version here), to the happy hardcore of "Feeling So Real", the punk rock of "Come On Baby" and so on.
I think this disc is the only one of the 3 that is justified to carry the "Best Of" title, and I wish that the included Best Of and Remix CDs had been made with a concept similar to that of the DVD. Also, the videos on this DVD are backed by the single versions of the tracks, which were the versions being played on the radio back then and which are rather hard to get these days. This applies specifically to "Everytime You Touch Me" and "Into The Blue", where the radio mixes done by the Beatmasters were very different (and, in my opinion, superior) to the album versions.
The only complaint I have about the DVD is that a few of Moby's videos are missing - "Go (Amphetamix)", "Move", the black & white version of "Hymn", "Feeling So Real (Westbam Mix)", "Everytime You Touch Me (Pure Joy Mix)", "Into The Blue (Spiritual Mix)", "Bring Back My Happiness" and the alternate version of "That's When I Reach For My Revolver".
The DVD was also released separately, including a bonus disc with a documentary about Moby. So if you're thinking about buying this set, I'd advise you to invest in that standalone DVD release instead.
